Manual Removal of Placenta

Manual Removal of Placenta

After childbirth, the placenta is usually delivered naturally within 15-30 minutes. In some cases, however, it may not come out completely - leading to retained placenta, which can cause heavy bleeding or infection if not treated promptly.

Dr. Vinayak Das, with 16+ years of experience in obstetrics, performs manual removal of placenta when required, using sterile techniques and gentle care to ensure safety for both mother and uterus.

When Is Manual Removal Needed?

  • Placenta does not deliver naturally after 30 minutes of birth
  • Only part of the placenta is delivered (retained fragments)
  • Signs of heavy bleeding after delivery
  • Placenta is abnormally attached to the uterus (in rare cases)

What Happens During the Procedure

  • Performed in a sterile setting, often in the delivery room or OT
  • Anesthesia (spinal or general) is given for comfort
  • Dr. Das gently inserts a gloved hand into the uterus to detach and remove the placenta
  • Uterus is massaged and monitored afterward to ensure normal contraction

Recovery & Aftercare

  • You may need a short observation period after the procedure
  • Antibiotics and uterotonics may be given to prevent infection and bleeding
  • Regular monitoring of uterine recovery and vital signs
  • Follow-up ultrasound, if needed, to ensure the uterus is clear
